Electronics Tips

  • Consider unplugging electronic devices like your television, DVD player and stereo when not in use. Why? Even when turned off, electronics still use power unless they are unplugged (This is known as “Phantom Power”). To make it easier, try to plug the devices into a power bar that you can easily reach.
  • If you are buying a new power bar, look for one with an automatic timer to shut off for the long periods that your electronic devices are not in use (i.e. at night).
  • If you use several personal use devices -- such as electric razor, toothbrush or facial massager – try cutting back on at least one and see if you can live without it.
  • Learn to turn off the radio or music player if the room is empty and no one is listening to the music.
  • Check your television settings to make sure you are not running in ‘retail mode’ – switch to the more energy efficient ‘home’ mode.
  • If you routinely fall asleep in front of the television, get out the manual and program the timer to automatically turn off the television.
  • Monitor you family’s television, video game and computer use. Encourage your family to develop hobbies and interests instead of spending many hours in front of a screen.
  • Only use your computer printer when you really need to print.
  • Run your computer using the ‘energy saving’ option.
  • Completely shut down your computer when not in use. Using the ‘hibernate’ or ‘sleep’ mode does not conserve enough energy.
  • Turn off and unplug your computer’s external devices when they are not in use, including the printer, scanner, external hard drive, speakers etc. These devices still consume energy unless they are turned off and unplugged.
  • Unplug the chargers for your phone, camera, laptop and mp3 player when not in use.
  • If you have a lot of devices that need charging – consider creating a ‘charging station’ and plug all into a power bar with a timer that can be turned off during the day.
  • Switch to a laptop computer -- it uses 90 per cent less energy then desktop computer.
  • Properly dispose of your old electronic equipment using an approved recycling program (Check with your municipality for details).
  • Choose electronics with the ENERGY STAR ®label because they use considerably less energy.
